Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been using the last few days to look back at their team’s underwhelming Premier League season so far, and indeed look forward to what they may be able to salvage in the last few months of the campaign.
The Toffees began the 2017/18 season full of optimism after finishing seventh in the top-flight last term, while investment of over £100 million had many feeling that their team could well sustain a challenge to the top six this time round. Yet things haven’t gone anywhere near according to plan for the Merseysiders, with Ronald Koeman sacked as manager back in October and replaced by Sam Allardyce a month later, who although has steadied the ship somewhat is struggling to win over the Goodison Park faithful.
As such, there are many frustrated Evertonians in the Tavern at present, several of whom are hoping their team can go on a run in the final eight games of the season to give them some momentum heading into the 2018/19 campaign.
And some of our resident Toffees fans are already looking ahead to the summer transfer window, and thus who their side should seek to land in a bid to move to the next level next time round.
And with Crystal Palace struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League, many reckon that the Toffees should reignite their interest in striker Christian Benteke, having reportedly been linked with him in January, if the Eagles are indeed relegated to the Championship.
Ultimately, the 27-year-old has proven his credentials as a Premier League striker over the last few years, be it leading the line for Aston Villa between 2012 and 2015, or indeed during his impressive spell at Selhurst Park ever since his move there from Liverpool in 2016.
The Belgium international has bagged 68 goals in just 177 appearances at top-flight level, and on only one occasion (at Liverpool in 2015/16) has he failed to score at least ten league goals in a single season.
His goals played a key part in keeping Allardyce’s Palace up last season, while his 42 strikes in 89 Premier League games for Villa were also integral in keeping them in the top tier – clearly, the 27-year-old is a hugely influential and adept striker at this level.
And Everton must show an interest if they are to start making their way back up the Premier League table.
The Toffees’ own striking options simply haven’t delivered the goods so far this season – Oumar Niasse has been dragged back in from the cold such have been their struggles. And while Cenk Tosun bagged his first goal for the club against Burnley last weekend, he may need more time to adjust to the demands of the division.
Yet that wouldn’t be the case for Benteke, who has spent the last six seasons scoring goals at this level, and appears to be the sort of striker Allardyce wants leading the line for his team – big, strong, aerially dominant, and someone to aim for from out wide.
And with the quality Everton have down the flanks, be it full backs Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman, or wingers like Yannick Bolasie and Theo Walcott, Benteke will get ample chances to score.
And with Palace somewhat struggling near the bottom of the division, Everton must be ready to reignite their interest in the £19.8 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) if the Eagles go down this season.
