Marco Silva picked up his first win as Everton manager with a 2-1 victory over Southampton at Goodison Park.
The Toffees made a perfect start to their first home game of the season with a wonderfully executed free-kick routine. Short passes resulted in Theo Walcott slotting home against his former club to delight the Goodison crowd. £50m winger, Richarlison, scored his third goal in two games shortly after to double the advantage and render Danny Ings’ late goal meaningless.
Everton were extremely busy during the final week of the transfer window with Silva bringing Yerry Mina, Andre Gomes and Kurt Zouma to the club on deadline day. One transfer saga continues to dominate the headlines on Merseyside despite the transfer window closing for English clubs. Young winger, Ademola Lookman, continues to be linked with a move away.
Valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, Lookman impressed for Charlton Athletic after graduating from their youth academy in 2015. The Toffees paid £8m to bring him to Merseyside in January 2017 and scored on his debut against Manchester City after replacing Ross Barkley. The youngster was tipped for a bright future but fell out of favour with Sam Allardyce and was loaned to RB Leipzig. Lookman netted five goals and registered four assists in just 11 Bundesliga appearances, and the German side are desperate to make a move permanent according to reports.
With Barkley having departed back in January, perhaps Lookman could be a proper replacement for the now-Chelsea man. Though the Toffees have had a lot of No.10s in recent months, Lookman’s ingenuity on the ball could help give them something new, as well chip in with goals.
Everton have already rebuffed offers for their prized asset and must continue to do so until the window closes. Still only 20-years-old, Lookman has all the right attributes to have massive success in the Premier League. The Englishman would thrive in Silva’s new attacking system and gives the Portuguese a valuable rotation option on the wings.
The Toffees should be in no rush to allow him to leave this summer.
