Everton supporters have been pretty quiet in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team go down 3-1 at home to Premier League champions-elect Manchester City on Saturday to suffer a 14th league defeat of the campaign.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their meeting with the Citizens off the back of successive wins over Brighton and Stoke City, but they were no match for Pep Guardiola’s side at Goodison Park last weekend. Goals from Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus, and Raheem Sterling sealed all three points for the North West outfit, and while the Toffees got one back through Yannick Bolasie midway through the second half, they were unable to mount a comeback to prevent a fifth home Premier League defeat of the campaign, and 14th overall.
As such, there have been many despondent Everton fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their team can get back to winning ways when host Merseyside rivals Liverpool on Saturday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Evertonians to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Southampton with a summer move for Barcelona forward Paco Alcacer.
Yet given the Toffees’ struggle for goals this term, Allardyce’s side should seek to hijack the Saints’ move for the £13.5 million-rated striking ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
Ultimately, the Merseysiders have found goals hard to come by for much of the current campaign, with it clear that the club have failed to adequately replace striker Romelu Lukaku, who of course left to join Manchester United over the summer.
Sandro Ramirez was bought from Malaga but he has failed to register a single Premier League goal, and as such went out on loan to Sevilla, while Oumar Niasse, exiled by former boss Ronald Koeman, was dragged back into the fold to underline the desperation felt by the Dutchman to get some goals.
And while Cenk Tosun has performed much better in recent weeks, there still remains some question marks over his suitability in English football, with it evident that their striking plight points the way of further reinforcements over the summer.
And that is where Alcacer comes in.
The 24-year-old earned a move to Barcelona back in 2016 after scoring 15 goals for Valencia in the 2015/16 season, and while he is perhaps unsurprisingly not a regular under Ernesto Valverde at the Nou Camp, he has still managed six goals for the Spanish giants this term to further underline his ability.
Ultimately, Barcelona wouldn’t have signed the Spain international if he wasn’t a quality forward, and just because he isn’t playing regularly for the European heavyweights doesn’t mean that he should be disregarded – it is arguably the toughest team in the world for a forward to get into at the moment.
And with Everton in need of reinforcements, and Alcacer likely in need of a move to reignite his career, the Toffees must seek to hijack Southampton’s reported move for the 24-year-old this summer.
