Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their side’s clash with Liverpool in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Saturday, although the Toffees go into the encounter off the back of a 3-1 defeat to Premier League champions-elect Manchester City.
Sam Allardyce’s men recorded back-to-back wins over Brighton and Stoke City prior to the visit of Pep Guardiola’s Citizens last week, but they were comfortably second-best against the league leaders with goals from Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus, and Raheem Sterling securing all three points for City. Nonetheless, our resident Toffees fans are very much looking forward to this weekend’s derby clash with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at Goodison Park, with Allardyce’s side eyeing their first win over the Reds since a 2-0 victory back in October 2010.
Subsequently, there are many excited Everton fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their team can end eight years of hurt by beating their bitter rivals on Saturday, although they are well aware of the size of the challenge what with the Reds thumping City 3-0 in the Champions League in midweek.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Evertonians to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Manchester United with a move for Chelsea forward Willian.
And with changes expected at Stamford Bridge this summer, Everton must seek to make an ambitious move for the £28.8 million-rated (as per Transfermarkt) linked-away Blues ace this summer given his impressive efforts for the London club over the years.
Ultimately, the 28-year-old has enjoyed many fine seasons at Chelsea since his move from Anzhi Makhachkala back in 2013, with the Brazil international netting 44 goals and laying on 38 assists in 228 games for the Premier League champions.
Yet the forward is already embarking on his best goal-scoring season for the Blues in bagging 13 in all competitions for Antonio Conte’s side, progressing from 11 in the 2015/16 season and 12 last time out to underline the improvements Willian is making to his game in the final third.
And with his tally of 11 assists this term the most he has recorded in a single campaign for the West London outfit, it’s clear that the 28-year-old is making big strides in the capital, and as such has proven to be hugely adept in the Premier League.
And with a key summer likely to come for Chelsea, what with the future of Conte and several first teamers under threat, Everton must seek to take advantage by making a move for the Brazilian star.
Clearly, the Toffees need that spark in the final third to push on next season and thus challenge the top six, and while Theo Walcott has made a fine start to life at Goodison Park, Willian would certainly be an upgrade.
Be it with the ball at his feet in open play or standing over a free-kick, the 28-year-old can produce moments of magic that can turn a game, and with the Toffees losing three away games by the odd goal this term, alongside drawing five times on the road, it’s clear they have lacked that moment of inspiration.
And if they want to challenge the top six next season, they will need that in abundance – Willian can provide it.
Thus, while United appear to be leading the race for the forward, Everton must seek to make an ambitious move for the 28-year-old in a bid to finally ask questions of the top six teams next season.
