Everton must turn attentions to Eric Bailly if permanent Kurt Zouma deal fails to materialise

According to a recent report from ESPN, Eric Bailly could be set for a move away in the near future. The centre back currently plays his football at Premier League giants Manchester United having made the move to Old Trafford back in 2016, but he has found game time hard to come by under manager Jose Mourinho this term to leave his future at the club far from certain.

And reports suggest that Italian giants AC Milan are interested in the Ivory Coast international in a bid to put him out of his United misery, yet these reports should be of interest to Everton manager Marco Silva, especially if his side are unable to land Kurt Zouma on a permanent deal come the end of the season.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the Toffees sealed a season-long loan deal for the 24-year-old back in the summer what with first team football unlikely at parent club Chelsea, yet he has arrived at Goodison Park and become a vital member of the squad already under new manager Silva.

The defender has started each of their last eight Premier League matches to underline his importance to the Everton backline, in which time he has struck up a decent partnership with fellow centre back Michael Keane to help the club to four wins in their last five league games.

Unsurprisingly, there has been some talk about whether the Toffees will be able to secure a permanent deal for Zouma come the end of the campaign, but with Chelsea seemingly very fond of the 24-year-old, it may prove tricky for Everton to get a deal done.

And if the club are left disappointed in their pursuit of the young defender, a move for United’s Bailly is another option they must seek to explore.

Yes, the 24-year-old hasn’t exactly shone throughout his time at Old Trafford, but there have been glimpses of brilliance from the centre back to suggest that he has what it takes to be a seriously accomplished defender at Premier League level.

In fact, the Ivorian became arguably the club’s number one centre back in his first season at the club with 38 appearances to his name in all competitions, only for things to not work out at all well for Bailly since then as a result of injury issues and a lack of form.

Nonetheless, there is clearly a very good defender in the 24-year-old, and Everton boss Silva may be able to do what Jose Mourinho hasn’t in getting the very best out of him – regular football and an arm round the shoulder may be the best course of action.

Yes, Everton fans would surely love to land Zouma permanently, but it very much remains to be seen whether that’s viable – if it’s not, the club must turn their attentions to United’s £27 million-rated Bailly (as per Transfermarkt), who doesn’t appear to have much of a future at Old Trafford.
