According to a recent report from Le10 Sport, Everton are interested in a January move for midfielder Ander Herrera. The 29-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League giants Manchester United and has done so since leaving Athletic Bilbao back in 2014, although with his contract up at the end of the season, his future at Old Trafford remains far from certain.

And a recent report from Le10 Sport suggests that Marco Silva’s Everton are eyeing up a move for the midfielder were they to lose Idrissa Gueye to PSG (as per L’Equipe), yet the Toffees would soon forget about the Senegal international were they to replace him with the 29-year-old this month.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, there is little doubting that 29-year-old Gueye has been the main man in the Everton midfield pretty much ever since making the move to Goodison Park from Aston Villa in 2016, with the Senegalese star since then making 94 appearances for the Merseyside outfit.

And with 86 of those coming in the Premier League, it’s clear just how reliable the midfielder has been in the Toffees first team over the years, and this term has proven to be no different with Gueye missing just three matches in the league so far under new boss Silva.

And with the 29-year-old very much one of the best central midfielders in the division in terms of being off the ball, with few better when it comes to making tackles, interceptions, and having an overall anticipation of the game, it’s not too great a surprise to see Thomas Tuchel’s PSG linked with Gueye as they seek a replacement for contract rebel Adrien Rabiot (as per L’Equipe).

And while there is little doubting that losing the 29-year-old would come as a blow to Silva and the Everton faithful, they would compensate somewhat for that departure were they to lure United’s Herrera to Goodison Park.

Like Gueye, the Spain international has earned many plaudits throughout his stint at Old Trafford for his tenacity and work-rate in the middle of the Red Devils midfield - one particular performance against Liverpool last season is one that is often referred to when speaking about the very best of the 29-year-old.

But to say that all Herrera has is off the ball capabilities would be doing him a disservice, as the Spaniard has 27 assists from his 179 appearances for the North West giants, of which three have come in the Premier League this term to help United into the race for the top four - and having only started 11 times in the league, that is a decent return.

Clearly then, not only would Herrera go some way to compensating for what Everton will lose off the ball were Gueye to leave, but he’d also add greater ability on the ball to a Toffees midfield department that is somewhat short of sufficient quality and depth - take Gueye out, and Silva would likely face something of a problem when it comes to selecting who plays alongside Andre Gomes.

Yet such decision would be made a lot easier were £25.2 million-rated Herrera (as per Transfermarkt) to swap Old Trafford for Goodison Park this month - in fact, the Toffees needn't worry about Gueye's possible exit were the 29-year-old to make the move to Everton before next week’s deadline.
