If Andre Gomes (linked with Tottenham by Catalan outlet Sport) doesn’t return next season, Everton clearly need to find his replacement. Well, they may have already found just the man and he’s Nikolas Vlasic, on loan at CSKA Moscow.
He’s just 21-years-old and has made 23 appearances in the Premier Liga this season. Indeed, he’s even scored and assisted five in the process, so he could be the long-term central midfielder the Toffees need to take them to the next level.
The youngster joined Everton from Croatian side Hajduk for £9.7m in August 2017, and he’s developed well out on loan. He’s played as more of an attacking midfielder this season and perhaps that’s why his contributions are so high, but that shows his versatility.
Marco Silva quite clearly wants his team to be able to turn defence into attack in an instant, and that means the whole midfield needs to be comfortable spraying balls to the attack and also joining in themselves when required. Vlasic is very capable of this.
The club need to spend money at left-back, centre-back and on a striker, so if they can save money in midfield by giving this lad a chance, then it’d benefit the team in more ways than one. Gomes could cost a fortune, but the Croatian is free.
Both Gomes and Vlasic enjoy having freedom to roam the pitch, but it’s Vlasic who has been more successful in the role this season. It’s time Everton gave him a chance to prove how much he’s developed in Russia and put some faith in him.
