The cogs in the transfer rumour machine keep turning as more twists and turns unfold in the Philippe Coutinho saga.
The highly sought-after playmaker could be available at a cut price this summer, according to pundit Noel Whelan. Speaking to Football Insider, the former Leeds forward believes that Barcelona would be willing to slash their asking price in the hope of offloading the Brazilian in the next window.
“There is a great deal to be had there on a fantastic player,” Whelan commented. “No one has got the best out of him since he left Liverpool but there is a player there, a good creative player.”
Should Everton sign Philippe Coutinho?
Coutinho has indeed struggled since leaving the Reds. His dream move to Barcelona didn’t pan out as expected, which resulted in booing from some of their fans and an eventual loan move to Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga giants aren’t looking to make his spell with them permanent, which has dangled a very attractive carrot in front of hungry Premier League clubs.
“If you can get that same ability that he had at Liverpool, you have a world-beater on your hands and you can get him for a very, very good price,” Whelan continued. Barcelona haven’t been immune to the financial struggles caused by the magnitude of recent events. As such, the La Liga stars could use Coutinho as a way to balance the books and make back some revenue.
The Leeds United matchday commentator believes that Spurs, Arsenal or Chelsea would suit Coutinho’s style of play ‘down to the ground’, but the lure of Carlo Ancelotti could still entice the Brazilian back to Merseyside.
Adding him to the Goodison ranks would be a marquee signing for the Blues, with the attacker boasting 95 goals and 71 assists throughout his career so far (via Transfermarkt).
