Former Premier League footballer Noel Whelan has tipped Dominic Calvert-Lewin to reach new heights next season, backing the striker to reach 20 league goals and gain international recognition for his efforts at Everton.
Calvert-Lewin has shone at times this year, netting 12 times in all competitions including five goals in his last six Premier League games. Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan suggested that Calvert-Lewin could become a 20-goal striker for the Toffees next season and even come to England’s rescue with plenty of striking injury woes for Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions.
He said: “Calvert-Lewin has been reborn under Duncan Ferguson and [Carlo] Ancelotti. He is now banging in the goals. Can he get you 20 a season? The way he is going at the minute, it seems like next season he probably can. Strikers thrive on confidence and he is getting it from both sides – the coaching staff and himself. It seems like he is loving life at the minute and is probably turning the head of Gareth Southgate, especially with the number of injuries to strikers for the national side.”
Whelan’s predictions are by no means far-fetched – with Calvert-Lewin on the verge of doubling his total Premier League goal tally this season having entered double figures for the campaign with his strike against Newcastle United in midweek.
Can Dominic Calvert-Lewin maintain this form?
With Tammy Abraham potentially adding to a growing list of injuries to English strikers ahead of Euro 2020, there can be few better options for Southgate in that position based on form than the Everton forward, with the likes of Danny Ings on a mini-drought after three games for Southampton without a goal.
Ex-Leeds United forward Whelan is also right to note Calvert-Lewin’s resurgence since the sacking of Marco Silva, with seven of his league goals this season coming since Duncan Ferguson’s first game in caretaker charge against Chelsea in December.
So perhaps a full season under the guidance of Ferguson and Carlo Ancelotti will see Calvert-Lewin find the form that takes his career to a new level – while 20 league goals may yet be in reach this year.
