Bordeaux manager Paulo Sousa is believed to be among the leading candidates to replace Marco Silva at Everton.
Football Insider reported that the Toffees have identified the 49-year-old Portuguese native as one of their prime targets to take the vacant manager’s job at Goodison Park.
With Duncan Ferguson in temporary charge following the dismissal of Silva on Thursday, Everton’s shortlist of potential permanent replacements also includes David Moyes, Vitor Pereira, Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Bordalas, according to Football Insider.
Sousa is currently enjoying a fine season in charge of Bordeaux, who went into this weekend’s Ligue 1 games in fourth place in the table and only two points off a Champions League qualifying position (as per TransferMarkt).
That leaves them on course for what would be their highest league finish since being crowned champions in 2009 and is a marked improvement on their lowly placing of 14th from last season. [via TransferMarkt]
Sousa, whose preferred formation is 3-4-3, has won just 10 of his 27 matches in charge of Bordeaux so far, although eight of those wins have come in 17 games this season, leaving him with a 37% win percentage and a return of 1.37 points per game from his time at the club. [via TransferMarkt]
Sousa has managed in the English leagues previously, with spells at QPR, Swansea and Leicester in the early years of his managerial career. [via TransferMarkt]
His longest spell in charge of a club is the two years and 95 matches that he had with Fiorentina between 2015 and 2017, although he has won league titles in Switzerland and Israel with Basel and Maccabi Tel Aviv respectively.
Although he currently has Bordeaux riding high and has won league titles elsewhere in Europe, Sousa’s moderate win percentage does not suggest that he would be an improvement on Silva at Goodison Park.
Also, with a further three years left on his deal with his current employers, it doesn’t seem overly likely that he will jump ship to Everton, especially with things going so smoothly for him in France right now.
