Everton punters in the Transfer Tavern have been raving about Tom Davies’ performances for the last few months.
Since taking the Goodison Park hot seat last summer, Ronald Koeman has sought to revolutionise the Toffees’ midfield, bringing in Idrissa Gueye from Aston Villa at the start of the campaign and signing Manchester United’s Morgan Schneiderlin in January.
But the introduction of academy product Davies has been arguably as influential. The 18-year-old made his first Premier League start of the season in a 3-0 win over Southampton in January and hasn’t looked back since, going on to make a further eight and notching up one goal and three assists in the process.
Consequentially, Everton drinkers in the Tavern have requested a round of celebratory ale from our landlord, after he revealed the latest gossip from ESPN – claiming the Toffees are ready to reward Davies’ form with a new contract.
Davies signed a five-year deal last summer after making his debut under Roberto Martinez but the club now want to bring his pay closer in line with the rest of the first-team squad, having proved his unexpected importance to the side.
There’s been a worrying trend of young English players earning massive salaries before truly establishing themselves at top level, but our Everton punters reckon the jinking midfielder will be able to keep his feet on the ground.
