Everton will attempt to hijack a move from Inter Milan for the young Hellas Verona centre-back Marash Kumbulla as Carlo Ancelotti looks to stamp his authority in his Blues’ squad, according to reports.
A meeting took place between the 19-year-old and the Serie A giants over a potential move in the future, according to TuttoMercatoWeb. The same publication also revealed that Manchester United were keeping an eye on him as he has established himself as one of the hottest prospects in Europe. Kumbulla has been impressive with Verona this season and has become a regular starter in a defence which has conceded only three more goals than the league leaders Juventus.
Gazzetta Dello Sport, cited by Sport Witness, revealed that the Red Devils were not the only Premier League club looking to capture his services and that Ancelotti’s Toffees have shown an interest in the Gli Scaligeri defender. While at Napoli, the three-time Champions League winner was, and remains, a big fan of Kumbrulla and had shown an interest in taking him to his former club before he was dismissed by Gli Azzurri in December.
The Blues are believed to be looking for reinforcements at the back during January, with only three established centre backs available for selection in Yerry Mina, Michael Keane and Mason Holgate. If interested, they must fight off stiff competition from the 13-time Premier League champions, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund.
Kumbulla has scored just once in 12 appearances this season but his performance figures easily suggest why Ancelotti is a such an admirer of the youngster. This season alone, he has averaged 2.5 clearances, 1.7 tackles, 1.8 completed long balls and a pass success rate of 85.9%, as per Whoscored. This showcases his composure and draws the picture of a player who could help in attacking transitions, as Ancelotti favoured during his time at Napoli.
Everton face a stern test to get this deal over the line as could cost as much as £20m, as cited by Liverpool Echo. The fact that former AC Milan boss is at Goodison Park could give the Blues a hefty boost in the transfer market, to sign the players that he wishes to improve the side. Given his stats, that does look to be the case here, at least in theory.
