Everton supporters have been pretty happy in the Transfer Tavern during the international break after seeing their side enter the two-week interruption having won just their second away Premier League game of the season at Stoke City.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their most recent league clash with the Potters having managed just one win from their previous 15 league matches on the road, a run which saw them pick up a mere eight points along the way. Regardless, the Merseysiders finally recorded their second away victory last weekend as a Cenk Tosun double either side of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s equaliser sealed all three points for the Toffees, subsequently moving them to the 40-point mark and 12 points clear of the bottom three.
Consequently, there have been many delighted Evertonians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping that their team can build some momentum in the final few games of the campaign to take into the 2018/19 season.
And many of our resident Toffees fans are already looking ahead to the summer transfer window and who their side could look to sign, with several of the opinion that their club should target Crystal Palace’s Mamadou Sakho were the Eagles to go down.
And that’s because the £13.5 million-rated centre-back (as per Transfermarkt) has proven himself to be hugely adept at this level, and would thus significantly bolster a leaky Everton backline.
Ultimately, the Toffees have seriously struggled at the back this term having shipped 50 goals in their 31 Premier League games – only four sides have shipped more than Allardyce’s men this season (Stoke, West Ham, Huddersfield Town, and Watford).
And while the former England chief did steady the ship somewhat at the back upon arrival, their recent difficulties in keeping just one clean sheet in 11 games underlines that there is a clear personnel issue at Goodison Park, and as such further reinforcements are required over the summer.
And that is where Sakho comes in.
The 28-year-old, formerly of bitter rivals Liverpool, played a huge part in keeping Palace in the Premier League under Allardyce last season, helping guide them to five wins from his eight appearances for the club before suffering ligament injury.
Yes, there may be some concerns among our resident Evertonians surrounding his injury problems this term, Sakho’s influence remains evident after returning to the side against Huddersfield Town last time out, and in turn helping Roy Hodgson’s men to a first Premier League win and clean sheet since January.
And having spent £26 million on luring him to Selhurst Park last summer, alongside his clear top-flight pedigree, the Frenchman will likely seek to move on were Palace to lose their Premier League status this term, and given they are two points clear of the drop, that’s a genuine possibility.
And if it were to happen, Everton simply must make a move for the 28-year-old in a bid to shore up their leaky backline ahead of a European assault next season.
