Everton supporters have been hugely frustrated in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side’s miserable away record continue courtesy of a 1-0 defeat at Watford in the Premier League on Saturday.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their trip to Vicarage Road having won just one of their previous 13 away league matches, a woeful run which is just about keeping relegation a genuine possibility this season. And the Toffees were unable to record a second away success of the campaign on Saturday as Troy Deeney’s effort 11 minutes from time was enough to clinch all three points from the Hornets in a drab game in Hertfordshire, thus seeing the Merseysiders slip to just seven points clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone.
Consequently, there have been many disappointed and angry Evertonians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their side can edge closer to the 40-point mark when they travel to Burnley next weekend.
In the meantime though, many of our resident Toffees fans have already been discussing the summer transfer window and what business their team should conduct, with many calling for the club to make an ambitious move for Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck.
And while the England international has struggled with injury in recent times, there’s no doubting his ability when fully fit, and with little over a year on his current deal at the Emirates Stadium, the Toffees must ask the question with an ambitious move in the summer.
Ultimately, the 27-year-old doesn’t look like earning the regular football he will likely be after under Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, what with the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang brought in during January to bolster their attacking ranks.
And with Mesut Ozil penning a new deal with the North London giants, Welbeck’s future prospects are looking very bleak indeed, although Wenger does want to keep the England international beyond the expiration of his contract in 2019.
And while the Gunners chief may want to keep Welbeck, for the better of his career prospects, a move away may help him reinvigorate his career and thus reach his best form.
And in an Everton side crying out for striking reinforcements and pace in the final third, he’d surely be the ideal man to come into Allardyce’s starting eleven.
Theo Walcott, who of course left Arsenal during January, has already had a big impact on Merseyside because he is exactly the sort of player the Toffees have needed all season. And while Welbeck isn’t as quick as his compatriot, he has enough pace and strength to cause problems for Premier League defenders – he’d also give Everton another key option and slightly different option down the middle.
Ultimately, it feels like his time at Arsenal is coming to an end, and with his contract up in the summer of 2019, both he and indeed the Gunners may be on the lookout for a resolution come the end of the campaign.
As such, the Merseysiders simply must bolster their attacking ranks with the £13.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
