Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville was shocked by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s antics on Saturday, after the England international was caught on camera laughing during the Toffees’ 3-1 defeat at home to Manchester City.
Marco Silva’s Goodison Park natives suffered their third successive Premier League defeat when they hosted the reigning title-holders on Saturday, where goals by Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling left the Toffees 15th in the table on seven points.
Everton have also now conceded twice as many as they have scored in the league this term, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s poaching depriving Seamus Coleman of what was the Blues’ sixth in seven games – moving the Sheffield-born forward level with Toffees top-scorer Richarlison on two top-flight strikes.
The scoreline could have been even more condemning on Everton’s efforts as they looked to test Pep Guardiola’s Etihad Stadium side, as Pickford almost gifted Bernardo Silva City’s fourth when he came rushing off his line late into the game.
Luckily for Pickford’s blushes, the Portuguese was not able to score his fifth of the campaign (WhoScored), but Neville was left far from impressed after cameras picked up on the England number one laughing after the brief scare.
The former Manchester United right-back was also underwhelmed by Pickford’s efforts to prevent Mahrez from scoring City’s second from a direct free-kick.
“Why is he laughing, Jordan Pickford?!” Neville said on Sky Sports. “I don’t know why he finds it funny. It’s not funny!
“He should have saved the second goal, and he’s nearly cost his team a fourth.”
Emotion has got the better of Pickford in the past, as well, as he could not let his Sunderland history from preventing him acting as the pantomime villain at St. James’ Park last season, amid a chorus of boos from the Newcastle United fanbase.
That day saw Pickford display an array of errors, too, as the 25-year-old allowed the occasion to ‘get to me a little bit too much’ (Guardian), before later coming out and claiming that he had learnt from it after conceding a penalty by clattering into Salomon Rondon.
Clearly, though, Pickford has not learnt from his errors, and is still making the small blunders that see pundits like Neville rightfully slam the Sunderland product.
At a time Everton are now without a win in three league games and just two points outside the drop zone, Silva needs the likes of Pickford to be a calming influence on his backline, and not one that causes distractions.
