When you compare the plight of Everton and Tottenham, they’re both quite similar teams. Both have recently emerged from the shadows of their nearest rivals, Arsenal and Liverpool, and turned into two of the best sides in the Premiership. When you compare the clubs this season however, it’s hard to believe they seem to have more differences than similarities.
Spurs have played some great attacking football and have played their way into a Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid. Everton seem to draw on their seemingly never-ending reserves of determination and grit. Tottenham sit in 5th, and Everton have had a disappointing season by their own high standards, and lie in 8th.
David Moyes recently said that the Blues have a had a poor season, and even the most loyal Toffee fan can see that they need serious investment. Considering their circumstances though, you have to admire the way they’ve fought to a top half finish, when for a while it was looking pretty hairy on the Blue side of Stanley Park.
No matter how different you are though, you can still end up chasing the same player! Both Spurs and Everton are targeting Fiorentina’s Polish stopper, Artur Boruc. The 31 year old goalie, is considered surplus to requirements at Fiorentina, and his agent Raymond Sparkes has apparently been seen holding talks with Everton and Tottenham. In deserted car-parks and under railway bridges. No, I’m joking!
Boruc was considered one of the best in Europe whilst at Celtic, and was a hugely popular figure in Scottish football (depending on who you ask in Glasgow) 31 is about the right age for a goalie, and both clubs do need a world class addition between the sticks.
What Everton will do with Tim Howard is an interesting question. He’s simply too good to sit on the bench, and has been in great form for the Blues this season. It’s the same with Gomes for Spurs. The Brazilian had a few critics when he first joined Tottenham, but he seems to have gotten over his concentration problems and has turned into one of the league’s best keepers. Should either club sign Boruc, it might leave their current goalie out in the cold. And Boruc isn’t joining to sit on the bench!
With those points in mind, it could just be another internet/paper based rumour, but if I was a fan of either team I certainly wouldn’t be disappointed with the link!
