After a dogged performance away at Manchester City last night, it’s fair to say that the Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern are slightly annoyed.
With Raheem Sterling having salvaged a point for the home side, the Toffees in the Tavern think it’s a shame their wonderful defensive performance was ultimately breached.
Still, our resident Evertonians are delighted for Wayne Rooney. Much was made about his return to his boyhood charges, though the 31-year-old now has two goals in two games for the club, including the opener last night.
So, imagine how well quotes sourced in the Daily Telegraph has gone down today. They’ve revealed Wazza is due to hold talks with Gareth Southgate over a potential return to the England national set-up.
“I am focusing on Everton but I am sure I will speak to England manager Gareth Southgate over the next few days and we will see what happens,” said Rooney.
The nation’s top scorer was left out of the most recent squad after his Manchester United form dipped, though the fact he recently struck in 200th Premier League goal surely will have given Southgate something to think about last night.
While it’s amazing to see Rooney doing well, perhaps merely focusing on Everton right now is better for him. Indeed, an England return could just complicate matters for him, while getting back in the goals at club level is far more important.
