Everton are set to prepare a substantial offer for Gremio winger Everton ‘Cebolinha’ Soares before the end of the January transfer window – which could be a concern for another Brazilian already at Goodison Park.
Brazilian media outlet UOL reported [via Sport Witness] that the Toffees are readying a bid of €25m (£21.1m) for the 23-year-old, with a potential fee of €30m (£25.3m) depending on bonuses. According to UOL, the Merseyside club have sent a salary agreement to the Brazil international and, while Gremio have said they haven’t received any formal offers for the player, they expect Everton to make an official approach for him in the coming days.
Soares scored 15 goals in 42 matches for Gremio during the 2019 season for Gremio, who finished fourth in their domestic league to qualify for the Copa Libertadores. He played 3,426 minutes for his club in that campaign, averaging a goal every 228.4 minutes.
He is a forward who likes to take on opponents one-on-one and isn’t afraid to go for goal when the opportunity arises, with match averages of 2.8 shots and 3.1 successful dribbles. While the 23-year-old doesn’t rack up a huge number of passes per game (26.4), he is generally reliable in terms of retaining possession for his team, with a passing success rate of 82.4%. Soares’ statistics compare favourably against Bernard, his fellow Brazilian left winger currently plying his trade at Everton. The 27-year-old has managed just two goals from 15 appearances all season and, having played 989 minutes over the course of the campaign, he has averaged a goal every 494.5 minutes, a far inferior rate compared to his Gremio counterpart. Bernard takes only a quarter of the number of shots per game (0.7) as Soares and also completes far fewer dribbles per game (1.3). His passing average of 24 per game isn’t far off the younger forward but the Everton man is significantly less accurate with the ball at his feet, posting a passing success rate of 75.6% so far this term. While Everton did manage to get Bernard on a free transfer and would have to pay between £20m and £25m for Soares, the Gremio man has been significantly outperforming the Toffees winger on several metrics over the past few months.
Also, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison being the only players in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad to have scored more than twice this season (as per TransferMarkt), the Merseyside club could really do with adding another consistent goal threat to their ranks, and Soares fits the bill. If they can land him between now and Friday, it’s a signing that could add plenty of attacking impetus from the left flank while also putting Bernard’s first team place under serious threat.
Everton fans, do you think Soares is a player that needs to be signed before Friday? Do you think he would get in the team ahead of Bernard if he joins the Toffees? Have your say by commenting below!
