Though the Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern were delighted to see their club smash Sunderland last night, one element was cause for concern.
Lost amid Romelu Lukaku’s hat-trick on Wearside last night was the half-time substitution of Ross Barkley.
Though the bulking midfielder had been showing good form since returning from Euro 2016, he was sloppy in the opening 45 minutes against the Black Cats.
Dropped from the England squad by Sam Allardyce, the 22-year-old faces a defining few months.
Now, according to the Daily Mail, he is heading for showdown talks with Ronald Koeman.
It is claimed both he and the Dutchman will meet to discover the route of his problems as they both do their bit to put the Three Lions ace back on track.
With a host of playmaking options available to Big Sam, time is running out for the Toffee if he is to force his way into international reckoning.
When asked as to why he dragged Barkley at half-time, Koeman responded: ‘Because he didn’t show the level I expect.’
‘I know it’s always difficult for the manager because he was not selected for the national team and you take the player off after 45 minutes.
‘But I had to do something. He lost too many balls. But I will speak to Ross tomorrow and that’s no problem.’
Will Barkley ever make the most of his potential? Let us know below….
