The Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill has fanned the flames in his war of words with Ronald Koeman by claiming the Dutchman is ‘bleating’ over the use of James McCarthy, as reported by RTE in Ireland.
Our Everton fans here in the Transfer Tavern are certainly worried that the Irish midfielder is getting overworked and that is where the disagreement between the two men began.
Koeman was incensed by O’Neill’s use of McCarthy after the midfielder had only just recovered from a six week injury lay-off.
The Everton player figured heavily during the Green Army’s World Cup Qualifiers last month and ahead of this month’s round of fixtures, he is in the squad again with O’Neill clearly having no qualms about using him.
The former Aston Villa and Leicester City boss said of Koeman’s complaints: “Considering that James had declared himself fit, he played the first game. He didn’t come off through injury [against Moldova], he came off through tiredness. And remarkably he actually trained on the very day at Everton that the manager was bleating about it.”
The Irish face Austria this month in their bid to qualify for Russia 2018 and are currently level on points with Serbia at the top of the group.
