Everton supporters have been pretty quiet in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side fail to get past a make-shift Liverpool XI in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Saturday.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their encounter with the Reds off the back of losing 3-1 at home to Manchester City in their previous league outing, whom Liverpool comfortably dispatched of in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash a few days later. And with the return leg taking place just a couple of days after Saturday’s derby, Reds chief Jurgen Klopp made several changes to his side at Goodison Park, but the Toffees were still unable to record a first win over their city neighbours since 2010 after only mustering a goalless draw.
Thus, there have been many disappointed Toffees fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom sensed a great opportunity to finally record a win over Liverpool at the weekend, and as such have been pretty deflated this week at their team’s inability to do so.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Evertonians to discuss, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand this summer.
And while the 28-year-old would certainly be a useful addition at Goodison Park, Allardyce’s side should forget about the England international, and instead target £22.5 million-rated Fulham wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon (as per Transfermarkt), as he’d be the perfect replacement for the ageing Leighton Baines.
Ultimately, 33-year-old Baines has been an excellent servant for Everton ever since his move from Wigan Athletic back in 2007, but with little over a year left on his current contract at Goodison Park (as per Transfermarkt), one senses that they are approaching the end of his time at the club.
And after 398 appearances for the Toffees, it’s clear that whoever comes in will have big boots to fill, yet there aren’t many more exciting left-sided players than Fulham’s Sessegnon at present.
The 17-year-old has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the last few years and is now an integral part of Slavisa Jokanovic’s side, having scored an impressive 14 goals and laid on six assists in 42 Championship appearances this season.
And while he has recently been playing in a more advanced position, the England Under-21 international has proven his capabilities as both a conventional left back and indeed a wing back in recent times, hence several top English clubs are keen on a move for the starlet.
Yet it’s Everton who must seek to land Sessegnon this summer.
It was highlighted during Baines’ absence through injury earlier this term that reinforcements are needed in the left back department, and with the Toffees often playing with wing backs as well as a natural left back, they need a player who can fit both roles – Sessegnon certainly can.
And with the undoubted ability to play further up the pitch, the 17-year-old would be able to fulfil a variety of roles and would thus give Allardyce plenty of options going forward – he’s an ideal star to have in the squad.
As such, while Bertrand is more proven in the Premier League, 17-year-old Sessegnon has an enormous future in the game, and as such would give Everton a better long-term replacement for the ageing Baines were they to land him this summer.
