Forget Cresswell: Everton would be better served landing his £16.2m-rated West Ham teammate

Everton supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their side only muster a 0-0 draw with a make-shift Liverpool team in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Sam Allardyce’s men went into their meeting with the Reds off the back of a 3-1 defeat at home to Premier League champions-elect Manchester City in their previous league encounter, whom Saturday’s opponents Liverpool then thumped 3-0 in the Champions League in midweek. Yet manager Jurgen Klopp made several changes to his side ahead of the return leg this evening, but the Toffees weren’t able to take advantage in only managing a goalless draw on Saturday, with it now eight years since they last beat their bitter rivals.

Consequently, there have been many disappointed Evertonians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom were frustrated with their team’s efforts on Saturday, although will be hoping they can get back to winning ways when they travel to Swansea City this weekend.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Toffees supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell this summer.

Yet recent reports suggesting that £16.2 million-rated Hammers teammate Javier Hernandez (as per Transfermarkt) could seek a move this summer should be of interest to the Everton hierarchy, who must thus forget about a move for Cresswell and instead target the Mexico international.

Ultimately, things haven’t quite worked out as planned for the 29-year-old since his move to the London Stadium last year, as although he has bagged eight Premier League goals for the club, he has made just 16 starts so far this season.

And given the Hammers’ clear struggles in the striking department over the course of the campaign, it seems clear that manager David Moyes doesn’t fancy the former Manchester United ace as a regular starter in the top-flight, which is not what Hernandez would have had in mind when he made the move from Bayer Leverkusen last summer.

As such, the Mexican is reportedly eyeing a move away this summer, and Allardyce’s Everton should be first in the queue as they seek the attacking reinforcements that could deliver a better season next time round than the one they are currently embarking on.

The Toffees have seriously struggled to put the ball in the back of the net over the course of the campaign, with just 38 goals to show for their 33 Premier League games so far.

And while Cenk Tosun has shown some form in recent times following his January arrival, it’s clear that further options are needed, what with Sandro Ramirez so out of favour he is out on loan, and Oumar Niasse simply not good enough to lead the line over the course of a season.

And Hernandez’s arrival would certainly strengthen those ranks.

The 29-year-old hasn’t always been able to lead the line on his own during his career, but a return of eight goals this season, alongside 59 goals in 158 games for United, underlines his ability in the Premier League – he is the goal-scorer the Toffees desperately need to move to the next level.

As such, they should forget about a move for Cresswell this summer, and instead target his West Ham teammate Hernandez.
