Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are in deep discussions with one another as to who could replace Sam Allardyce as the club’s new manager ahead of the 2018/19 Premier League season.
Former England chief Allardyce was relieved of his duties at Goodison Park earlier this month despite leading the club to an eighth place finish this time round, a significantly healthier position than when he was appointed back in November. However, the 63-year-old came in for heavy criticism from several Toffees fans both home and away as the season wore on, eventually resulting in the club’s hierarchy parting with the Englishman at the end of the campaign.
Thus, attentions among our resident Evertonians are very much on the managerial search, yet several are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking defender Ramiro Funes Mori with a move away from Goodison Park.
Yet the Toffees simply must forget about sanctioning the Argentine’s departure this summer, as there is only one defender they should be getting rid of, namely Ashley Williams.
Ultimately, Funes Mori endured a testing season this time round in mustering just four Premier League appearances for the Merseysiders, with an operation on a knee injury back in the summer forcing him to miss the vast majority of the campaign.
However, prior to that, the 27-year-old had proven to be a reasonably solid centre back at Premier League level and arguably one of the better ones in the Everton squad, so selling him this summer would be something of a surprise, not least because of their defensive frailties this term.
Whereas Williams has been far from his best in an Everton shirt this season, with the Wales international failing to replicate his Swansea City form since his move to Goodison Park back in 2016.
The 33-year-old was one of the most highly-rated centre backs in the division during his time at the Liberty Stadium, and while there have been a few signs of that form since his move to Merseyside, it simply hasn’t been there on a consistent basis.
Several of our resident Evertonians have been calling for the defender to be dropped on many occasions over the course of the campaign, with it arguably no coincidence that they finished the season reasonably strongly in his absence from their last nine matches.
And given his contract expires in 12 months’ time, and the fact that he’ll turn 34 in August, the new Everton boss will surely be looking to offload Williams during the close season, and instead look towards the future and their new era in their new stadium in a few years’ time.
As such, the Toffees should forget about getting rid of Funes Mori this summer, as there is only one defender they should be letting go, namely 33-year-old Williams.
