Everton supporters have been somewhat satisfied in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their side net a late leveller to clinch a point against Premier League strugglers Southampton on Saturday.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their encounter with the relegation-threatened Saints having won both of their previous league matches, with successes against Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town suggesting that the Toffees were on the up. However, they fell behind at Goodison Park on Saturday thanks to Nathan Redmond’s opener, and Mark Hughes’ team looked on course for a vital three points until Tom Davies grabbed an equaliser in the 96th minute to preserve a point for the Merseysiders.
Thus, there have been many relieved Toffees supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hopeful that their team can indeed finish the campaign on a high with all three points at West Ham on Sunday in their final match of the season.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Evertonians to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that midfielder Wayne Rooney could be on his way out of Goodison Park this summer.
Yet the Toffees should forget about getting rid of the 32-year-old, as there is only one midfielder they should seek to sell this summer, namely Davy Klaassen.
Ultimately, while Rooney played a key part in the first half of the campaign in producing the goods at a time whereby Everton were struggling, Netherlands international Klaassen simply has made no impact whatsoever since his summer move from Ajax.
The 25-year-old has just 15 senior appearances to show for his efforts for the Merseyside outfit this term and only six of them have come in the Premier League, with his most recent coming against Southampton on Saturday in his first appearance in the league since mid-March.
Yes, there’s no doubt that the Dutchman has fallen foul of the poor recruitment policy of last summer, in which the Toffees signed three numbers tens in him, Rooney, and Gylfi Sigurdsson, but it is now two managers, Ronald Koeman and Allardyce, who have rarely used the midfielder – that itself underlines his struggles.
And while it’s clear from his time at Ajax, most notably last season in which he netted 20 goals for the Dutch giants, that Klaassen possesses genuine ability in the final third, his difficulties in replicating that, alongside better and more proven options in that position, suggests that his Everton career could be at an end this summer.
Thus, while some of our resident Evertonians have been disappointed with Rooney’s efforts this season, he has certainly made more of an impact than Klaassen, and should be commended for keeping the Toffees afloat in the first half of the campaign.
As such, the Merseysiders should forget about sanctioning Rooney’s departure this summer, as there is only one midfielder they should look to sell, namely Klaassen.
