Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to their side’s trip to struggling Swansea City in the Premier League on Saturday, what with their team hoping to get back to winning ways after two frustrating results at Goodison Park.
Sam Allardyce’s men were humbled 3-1 by champions-elect Manchester City a fortnight ago but were very much presented a chance to return to winning ways last time out against Liverpool, what with Jurgen Klopp making several changes to his side given they were in the middle of a Champions League quarter-final. Yet the Toffees were only able to muster a 0-0 draw with their bitter rivals as their long wait for victory over Liverpool goes on, with their last success all the way back in 2010.
Nonetheless, there are many excited Evertonians in the Tavern ahead of their clash with Carlos Carvalhal’s Swans this weekend, with the Toffees going in search of back-to-back away league victories for the first time since January 2017.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Everton fans to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that their club are ‘growing in confidence’ that they will land Jack Wilshere from Arsenal this summer.
And while there is little doubting that the England international would be a fine addition to Allardyce’s squad, the Toffees should forget about a move for Wilshere and instead be bold by targeting his £36 million-rated Gunners teammate Aaron Ramsey (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, 25-year-old Wilshere has been riddled by injuries for the vast majority of his career to date, and while the Englishman has appeared more times this term than in any of his past three seasons at Arsenal, there will always be concerns surrounding his injury record.
Not only that, but teammate Ramsey has enjoyed one of his best seasons of his career this term round, with the Wales international scoring ten goals and laying on ten assists for Arsene Wenger’s side in all competitions, six goals and eight assists of which coming in the Premier League.
Clearly, the 27-year-old has been one of Arsenal’s better players this term and is now embarking upon his best campaign since the 2013/14 season, thus suggesting that he has returned to the high level associated with the Welshman a few years ago.
However, his future at the Emirates Stadium is slightly uncertain given that his current contract runs out next summer, and after the furore of the Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil situations this time last year, it’s staggering that the Gunners have again left themselves in a predicament regarding the future of one of their most influential players.
Nonetheless, Everton should seek to take advantage as there is little doubt that Ramsey would make a huge difference in Allardyce’s side, a side that have clinically underachieved this season and as such will be targeting a much better campaign next time round.
Be it in a slightly deeper role, perhaps alongside Idrissa Gueye, or indeed as part of a midfield three or slightly further forward, Ramsey has proven to be adept in any midfield role so far this season – the same can’t necessarily be said of the midfield options at Goodison Park.
And if Everton are serious about challenging the top six in the coming years, these are the sort of ambitious signings they simply have to make, and Arsenal have left the door slightly ajar given Ramsey’s future is uncertain.
And Allardyce’s side simply must take advantage in trying to land the Welshman this summer instead of his injury-prone teammate Wilshere.
