The Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern are extremely encouraged by reports linking their club with a move for Jack Wilshere this summer, but there is reason to believe they shouldn’t be getting their hopes up just yet.
Jack Wilshere’s Arsenal career seemed all but over at the beginning of the season when his first-team opportunities were mostly limited to a handful of Europa League appearances, but that has all changed in recent months. An injury collected by Aaron Ramsey opened the door for Wilshere to make his full Arsenal comeback, and so far he has made the most of his opportunity to impress for The Gunners.
However, his future remains uncertain as his contract is due to expire in the summer. According to The Daily Mirror, Arsenal are only willing to offer Wilshere a new deal worth £90,000 a week, which is less than he is currently on, but Everton are prepared to better Arsenal’s offer in a bid to tempt the England international to Goodison Park.
Everton’s bid for Wilshere demonstrates a level of ambition that will be required if The Toffees want to improve on their lacklustre campaign next season, however, their failure to qualify for European football could deter Wilshere from making the switch to Merseyside. It’s likely that Wilshere will have a handful of offers on the table from clubs in both the Europa League and the Champions League once his contract expires, so Everton are unlikely to emerge as winners in the race for his signature.
With that to consider, Everton should consider alternative options to bolster their options in central-midfield, and one player who should certainly be on their radar is Huddersfield’s star player, namely Aaron Mooy (valued at £8.1 million by Transfermarkt). First and foremost, Mooy is a more realistic signing for Everton considering he would be moving from a club battling to avoid relegation to a club who should be aiming to qualify for Europe next season.
But it’s not only Mooy’s likely interest in joining Everton that should draw the club towards his signature, as his quality performances at the heart of The Terriers midfield suggest he would be a terrific addition to their squad. The Australian international was instrumental in enabling Huddersfield to clinch promotion last season, and he deservedly claimed the player of the season award for his efforts as voted for by the supporters.
Mooy has continued his fine form in the top-flight this season and he has provided 4 goals and 3 assists so far, including the opener during Huddersfield’s victory over Manchester United back in October. It’s unlikely that Huddersfield will be willing to allow their prize asset to depart the club without a fight at the end of the season, but every player has their price, so if Everton fail in their pursuit of Wilshere they should instead make every effort to land Mooy.Like what the TT have on offer?
