Speaking to BBC Sport, former Everton midfielder Kevin Kilbane has laid the blame at Roberto Martinez’s door for Ross Barkley’s seeming lack of progression since he first broke onto the scene. Now, some of our resident Toffees fans here in the Transfer Tavern agreeing with him.
Barkley burst onto the scene a few years ago and looked like he would be the next big thing for the club and for England, but he has been inconsistent since, showing flashes of what he can do and proving frustrating at other times.
He put in a similar performance against West Ham on Sunday where he scored and looked a menace but also gave the ball away too easily and for Kilbane, there’s only one man to blame for Barkley not getting that discipline and consistency in his game.
“Over the past few seasons working under Roberto Martinez, you know from speaking to Martinez he let him go out and express himself, but I think that maybe took away from his development”, said the former Republic of Ireland international.
”I think he might have needed to be shown on the video, look that’s where you’re going wrong.”
The 22-year-old has been taken out of the side at times this season by Ronald Koeman when he has not performed but it still remains to be seen if he can become a more consistent midfielder in the future.
Dropped for the two most recent England squads after not playing a single minute at Euro 2016, this a pivotal moment in his career.
