This has got to be the craziest football rumour I’ve heard all year. It turns out that when he’s not appearing on Libyan television defending his ruthless dictatorship and comparing himself to the Queen, Colonel Gaddaffi is following David Moyes’ Everton side.
Officially the person you would least like to have at a dinner party, Colonel Gaddaffi is one of the world’s leading dictators and has been in the news almost as many times as Wayne Rooney and Mark Clattenburg have this week.
But the Libyan leader is apparently a big Everton fan and has supported the Blues since the team visited his country in the 1970s. He was said to be so impressed by Gordon Lee’s side that he had the Libya national team’s kit altered to Royal Blue, and gave each of the Everton squad their own Arabic rug as a present.
So he’ll have been quite pleased with the weekend’s result which saw the Toffees beat Sunderland by 2 goals to nil. Who knows, maybe it gave him a brief respite from all the trouble he’s been having lately! It could be worse. He could have tried to buy Newcastle. At least Mike Ashley would have found someone hated more than him.
