Huge statement of intent: Moshiri’s ambitions would be met if Everton land £16.2m-rated ace

Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the new era at Goodison Park following the appointment of Marco Silva as the new Toffees manager back in May.

The 40-year-old had been out of a job since being sacked as Watford boss back in January, with Everton just prior to that doing their utmost to lure the Portuguese to Merseyside following their decision to part with Ronald Koeman. Nonetheless, the Toffees now have their man after relieving Sam Allardyce of his duties at the end of last season, this all despite leading the club to an eighth place finish in the Premier League.

Regardless, there are many excited Evertonians in the Tavern ahead of the 2018/19 season, and they are likely to be interested by recent reports linking their club with a move for Mario Gotze, who of course scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final.

And were the Toffees to indeed land the £16.2 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), it would be a huge statement of intent ahead of the new season that Everton are serious about challenging the top six clubs.

Ultimately, the 2017/18 campaign was a huge disappointment for the Merseysiders after a summer of big spending, with the Toffees languishing in the bottom three when Koeman was sacked in October, and although they got out of danger, it was far from pretty under former boss Allardyce.

However, with the exciting Silva now in charge, there is much optimism among those in the Tavern, although it’s clear that top-quality talent is still needed in the Everton squad to bridge the gap and indeed challenge the top six clubs in the Premier League next term – Gotze would be in that category.

The 26-year-old may not have enjoyed the best of times recently, but there is little doubting that he is a fine attacker given he scored 36 goals and laid on 24 assists for Bayern Munich between 2013 and 2016, this all after an equally-impressive spell at Borussia Dortmund.

And alongside the winning goal in the World Cup final four years ago, there is no question that the Germany international is a star name and likely exactly the sort of player owner Farhad Moshiri wants at Goodison Park, as they seek the additions that can take them to the next level ahead of their move into a new stadium in the coming years.

And a fresh start somewhere different could be exactly what Gotze needs to reignite his career once again, and were he to hit his best form in the blue of Everton, Silva would have an absolute gem in his ranks – the sort that can inspire the club to the next level.

As such, not only would landing Gotze be a huge statement of intent, given four other Premier League sides are reportedly keen, but it would also go some way to matching Moshiri’s lofty ambitions for the Toffees.
