Everton supporters have been pretty quiet in recent times after seeing their side bow out of the Carabao Cup at the third round stage on Tuesday night.
Marco Silva’s men went into their encounter with fellow Premier League outfit Southampton off the back of a 3-0 success over Fulham in the league a few days earlier, which thus got them back to winning ways after a testing few weeks. Yet the Toffees weren’t able to keep that momentum going in losing on a penalty shoot-out to Mark Hughes’ Saints on Tuesday night, having drawn 1-1 after 90 minutes through goals from Danny Ings for the visitors, and Theo Walcott for the hosts.
As such, there have been many disappointed Evertonians up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by the recent England squad announcement from manager Gareth Southgate, with Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford again getting the nod.
But another notable inclusion was that of Borussia Dortmund youngster Jadon Sancho, whose move to the Bundesliga last summer has very much got his career going after coming up through the ranks at Manchester City.
And making the move to the German top-flight in a bid for game time and thus to develop should be of interest to several youngsters given Sancho’s success, not least Everton sensation Kieran Dowell.
The 20-year-old has come up through the youth ranks at Goodison Park but has so far only mustered five senior appearances for the Toffees, two of which have come this term in their run to the third round of the Carabao Cup.
But with 16 appearances for the England Under-20s and indeed ten for the Under-21s, it’s clear that the attacker has a very bright future ahead for both club and country, but given he is unlikely to feature regularly under Silva at Everton in the short term, he may need to make a change in order to really push on and fulfil his potential.
He has clearly got ability having excelled on loan at Championship side Nottingham Forest last season, netting ten goals and laying on five assists for the East Midlands giants, but now it may be time to step things up, and thus take a leaf out of Sancho’s book by making a move to the Bundesliga.
18-year-old Sancho left the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2017 to make the brave move to Dortmund, and while things didn’t go particularly well for the Englishman in the early phase of last season, he finished the campaign brilliantly with a goal and three assists in his last four appearances.
And he has since taken it up another level this time round in bagging once and laying on eight assists in just nine appearances for Lucien Favre’s men, which is particularly impressive given he has started on only two occasions so far this term – clearly, he is making a big impact whenever he is on the pitch.
And his resurgence in the German top-flight should well be of interest to Everton’s Dowell, as England boss Southgate is clearly planning for the future and very much placing emphasis on youth – Dowell could well be part of that conversation.
But only if he is playing regularly and developing at the same rate as his peers which is why, with regular football something of a problem at Everton, the 20-year-old should seek to take a leaf out of Sancho’s book by making a move to the Bundesliga.
