Koeman eyeing Zlatan nullifying stars to solve Everton’s problem position

The Transfer Tavern’s Everton patrons have been impressed with their side’s steady improvement under Ronald Koeman this season.

The Toffees have finished in the bottom half for two consecutive campaigns but could qualify for Europe this time around, currently six points off this weekend’s opponents Liverpool in fourth.

However, weaknesses still need to be addressed this summer if Koeman is to make the Goodison Park outfit a regular top-four contending side and one area that appears to be catching his attention in particular is the heart of defence.

Ashley Williams arrived from Swansea City last summer but will turn 33 at the start of next season, whilst long-time stalwart Phil Jagielka recently lost his place in the starting XI to Ramiro Funes Mori – who is now injured.

Perhaps most tellingly, reports from The Liverpool Echo claim there are two exciting young centre-backs on Koeman’s radar ahead of the summer; Burnley’s emerging England international Michael Keane and Hull City hotshot Harry Maguire.

The English duo have been in strong form this term and also have something else in common; both have claimed clean sheets against Zlatan Ibrahimovic this season – even though the Swedish international is fifth in the Premier League’s scoring charts.

The Echo claim Maguire’s performance against the Manchester United striker last month caught the attention of Toffees chiefs. Keane, meanwhile, held his former club to a scoreless draw at Old Trafford back in October.
