According to a recent report from The Daily Mirror, Everton are interested in a late summer move for Kurt Zouma. The 23-year-old currently plays his football at Chelsea and has done so since 2014, although the defender spent the entirety of last season on loan at Stoke City, in which he failed to help keep the Potters in the Premier League.

Yet Marco Silva’s Toffees are reportedly keen on the £13.5 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt), in a deal which would undoubtedly represent their biggest signing of the summer.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, new manager Silva hasn’t been overly busy during his first transfer window in charge at Goodison Park, with just Richarlison and Lucas Digne making the move to the blue half of Merseyside.

And while both arrivals would go some way to bolstering the winger and left back ranks respectively, it’s clear based on their struggles defensively last season that the centre back department, and thus reinforcements, should be a more pressing concern for Silva this summer.

As such, were they to get a deal done for Chelsea’s Zouma, it would represent their biggest addition of the window.

The 23-year-old may well have been part of a Stoke team relegated last season, but he was arguably one of a select few bright sparks in a miserable campaign for the Staffordshire-based outfit, with his tally of 34 Premier League appearances indicative of his importance to the squad.

And with 71 appearances for Chelsea, it’s clear that the France international has a bright future ahead of him and could well be on the trajectory towards becoming a quality Premier League centre back - he certainly has the pace, power, and strength seemingly needed to be a top modern-day centre half.

And with Everton shipping 58 goals in the Premier League last season, and having seen the likes of Ashley Williams and Ramiro Funes Mori leave the club this summer, it’s imperative that Silva brings another centre back in, especially given Mason Holgate has been struggling with injury during pre-season.

As such, despite the obvious positives of bringing in messrs Richarlison and Digne, a centre back has been a priority for Everton this summer, which is why sealing a deal for Zouma would be the biggest signing Silva has made at Goodison Park during the close season.
