The Everton fans were absolutely furious in the Transfer Tavern on Saturday evening after they watched their side get completely torn apart by a rampant Arsenal at The Emirates.
The Toffees suffered a crushing 5-1 defeat against The Gunners on Saturday on an evening when Eliaquim Mangala made his debut for the club. Mangala arrived at the club in a deadline day loan deal from Manchester City after becoming surplus to requirements at The Etihad following Aymeric Laporte’s record-breaking move from Athletic Bilbao.
Mangala demonstrated plenty of promise with a handful of his performances during the early stages of his career at City, but over time he looked increasingly less capable of competently carrying out the most basic of defensive tasks. Despite this, Sam Allardyce added him to him his squad on deadline day in order to bolster his defensive options.
Allardyce then made the brave decision to throw Mangala (who has a Transfermarkt rating of £13.5m) straight into the action by deploying him in a back-five against Arsenal, and it’s fair to say the Everton managers decision turned out to be an extremely poor one.
The level of Everton’s defensive performance was so catastrophic that it would have insulted a decent Sunday league side, and Mangala was often at the heart of everything Everton did badly.
Mangala was culpable of being out of position, refusing to throw his body on the line and misjudging defensive situations, but the fact it was his debut for the club should be taken into consideration.
However, Mangala simply cannot afford to demonstrate that level of performance again, and if he fails to dramatically improve in the weeks to come he will go down as one of Everton’s worst signings in the Premier League era.
