According to a recent report from Calcio Mercato, Cesc Fabregas could be set for a move away in the near future. The Spain international currently plays his football at Premier League giants Chelsea and has done so since leaving Barcelona back in 2014, although with his contract up at the end of the current campaign, his future at Stamford Bridge remains very much uncertain.

And reports suggest that Italian giants AC Milan are eyeing up a move for the 31-year-old, which should be of interest to Everton manager Marco Silva, what with it looking highly unlikely that their side will be able to lure Andre Gomes to the club permanently in the summer.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, while Idrissa Gueye appears to be the number one central midfielder at the Merseyside outfit, Silva has otherwise struggled to nail down a regular partner for the Senegal international in the heart of his midfield, what with Morgan Schneiderlin and Tom Davies having both unconvinced at times this season.

The former made a big money move to Goodison Park from Manchester United in a bid to solve that midfield problem, and while there have been glimpses of the player who shone at Southampton, he has on the whole failed to truly bat away the club’s midfield fears - there’s a reason he hasn’t started a Premier League game since the start of September.

Yes, Gomes does appear to be the answer to Silva’s problem for now, but frustratingly he’s only on loan until the end of the current campaign, and a permanent deal seems reportedly unlikely, to leave the Portuguese facing the same conundrum come the summer - but not if he is able to convince Fabregas of a move to Goodison Park.

The 31-year-old has proven to be one of the best midfielders in the Premier League during his respective stints at Arsenal and now Chelsea, what with the Spaniard, winner of the World Cup and European Championships with his country, having scored 50 goals and laid on 113 assists in just 347 appearances in the English top-flight.

And with two Premier League titles to his name in that time, both coming during his current spell at Stamford Bridge, alongside FA Cup glory with both the Blues and the Gunners, Fabregas also possesses the sort of trophy-winning pedigree in England that is lacking in Silva’s current Everton squad - the sort of pedigree needed to help take the club forward.

And with the 31-year-old excelling in a slightly deeper role in the last few years at Chelsea, he could be the ideal man to partner the combative Gueye in the middle of the park - after all, Fabregas had much success alongside N’Golo Kante in the 2016/17 season as the Blues won the title, and Gueye is a very similar player to the Frenchman.

As such, Everton must be looking at £22.5 million-rated Fabregas (as per Transfermarkt) as the man to answer their midfield problems, with the Spaniard without doubt a huge upgrade on Schneiderlin, at the same time the sort of signing Silva must get done to compensate for the likely disappointment to come from the Gomes situation.
