According to a recent report from France Football (via Get Football News France), Everton are interested in a move for striker Jean-Kevin Augustin. The 21-year-old currently plays his football at Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig and has done so since leaving French giants Paris Saint-Germain back in 2017, with his fine form in Germany seemingly attracting interest from Toffees manager Marco Silva.

And that’s because reports suggest that the Portuguese is eyeing up a move for the £22.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), the addition of which would leave Manchester United very much looking over their shoulder in their battle with Silva's men for a top six place in the Premier League.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils have embarked upon a disastrous league campaign so far to sit sixth in the table and eight points adrift of fifth place Arsenal, although the United boss did state not too long ago that he still expects his side to finish above Silva’s Everton.

But it was only at the weekend in which the North West giants leapfrogged the Toffees following their 4-1 win over Fulham at Old Trafford, coupled with Everton’s last-gasp draw with Watford on Monday night, so there evidently isn’t a huge amount to choose between the two teams ahead of the remainder of the season.

And while United themselves clearly have issues that Mourinho will surely seek to address come the New Year, it’s pretty obvious that Everton are a striker away from becoming the complete package, what with the likes of Cenk Tosun and Oumar Niasse simply not up to the job of leading the line for the Toffees.

Yes, Richarlison has done a fine job in recent weeks in the number nine role, but chances are he will get found out as the season wears on, which is why they have to bring in an out-and-out striker in January to seriously give United something to think about in the race for a top six finish - and Augustin appears to be the man for the job.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a stellar 18 months at Leipzig in netting 20 goals and laying on eight assists in 59 appearances for the German outfit, nine goals and five assists of which coming in the Bundesliga last season as they recorded a sixth place finish in the top-flight.

And with eight goals in all competitions already this time round, the France Under-21 international continues to produce the goods in front of goal, very much appearing to be the sort of striker Everton are crying out for heading into the second half of the season.

Clearly, Silva and the club’s hierarchy did a fine job of plugging key areas of the squad in need of strengthening during the summer, most notably Lucas Digne at left back and Andre Gomes in midfield, but an out-and-out number nine still evades them - arguably, that’s the reason why they are behind United presently.

So if the Toffees are able to lure 21-year-old Augustin to Goodison Park during January, given that the rest of the side appears settled and heading in the right direction under Silva, the Merseysiders will certainly given United something to think about in the battle for a top six place come the end of the season.
