According to a recent report from Sport, Everton are closing in on a deal to bring defender Yerry Mina to Goodison Park. The Colombia international only made the move to La Liga champions Barcelona back in January but managed just six appearances for Ernesto Valverde’s side in the second half of last season, although did prove his worth for his country in their run to the last 16 of the World Cup earlier in the summer.

And reports suggest that Marco Silva’s Everton are set to seal a deal for the 23-year-old, and having already done some shrewd business in bolstering his left back and winger ranks, the new Toffees chief must now seek to complete an excellent summer at Goodison Park by moving for Tottenham’s Harry Winks.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, it was pretty evident from last season that the Merseysiders were in need of drastic change at the back given they shipped more goals than the relegated Premier League duo of Swansea City and West Brom, alongside the fact that the likes of Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka, and Ashley Williams are all entering the twilight of their careers.

The arrival of Lucas Digne will go some way to providing the long-term replacement for Englishman Baines, while the seemingly likely addition of Mina will give Silva a youthful option in the heart of his defence, and a towering presence from which to build a backline around for many years to come.

Thus, the Portuguese has been busy addressing areas of his squad in need of strengthening, and another one that could ideally do with some improvement is the central midfield ranks, what with Wayne Rooney having left for DC United, and the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Muhamed Besic having been linked with moves away.

And with Tottenham reportedly keen on midfielder Stanislav Lobotka, England international Winks should be one man on Silva’s radar given he could well suffer from the Slovakian’s possible arrival in North London.

22-year-old Winks may well have penned a new long-term deal to remain at Spurs earlier this summer, but the midfielder managed just 16 Premier League appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s men last time round, and only a further nine in other competitions.

And while the future of Mousa Dembele is far from certain heading into the final few days of the transfer window, the fact that Tottenham are reportedly keen on Celta Vigo’s Lobotka suggests that Winks could find first team football tricky under Pochettino this term.

And that is why Silva must pounce by making a move, probably a loan one, for the one-time England international.

Idrissa Gueye was arguably Everton’s best central midfielder last season, but with Rooney having left, James McCarthy injured, and the futures of messrs Schneiderlin and Besic unclear, Silva may feel that another accomplished top-flight option is needed in that department - Winks fits the bill.

And while a permanent deal looks set to be a tough ask given his new long-term Tottenham contract, reports that Spurs are keen on fellow midfielder Lobotka should prompt the Toffees into making a move for the £13.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt).
