Opinion: Everton could be about to make their biggest transfer mistake in years

Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the new era at Goodison Park following the appointment of Marco Silva as the new Toffees manager last month.

The 40-year-old replaces Sam Allardyce in the hotseat following his departure at the end of last season, this all despite leading the Merseysiders to an eighth place finish in the Premier League. Nonetheless, the Toffees now have their man in former Hull City and Watford boss Silva, who many will hope can be the man to take the club towards the top six places this coming season.

Thus, there are many excited and expectant Evertonians in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent reports suggesting that Ademola Lookman could be set to leave the club this summer.

And the Toffees could be about to make their biggest transfer mistake in years if they do indeed sanction the 20-year-old’s departure this summer.

Ultimately, things haven’t quite happened for the attacker since his move to Everton back in January 2017, with the England Under-20 World Cup winner failing to build upon a debut which saw him net against Manchester City after just a few minutes on the pitch.

Since then, the former Charlton Athletic man has managed just 23 senior appearances of which only eight have been starts, to the point that he instigated a loan move to RB Leipzig back in January in a bid for regular football, seemingly against the wishes of ex-boss Allardyce.

However, the 20-year-old showed everyone exactly what he could do in netting five goals and laying on four assists in just 11 Bundesliga appearances for the German side, and it’s his undoubted potential, as well as the likelihood of him making a difference in the present, which should see Everton retain his services this summer.

At the tender age of 20, there is no doubting that Lookman has a big future ahead of him, but having just gone to one of the best divisions in Europe and torn it up for the most part, he could offer Everton something this season as well.

And when one considers that Yannick Bolasie struggled for form in the second half of last season, and Theo Walcott’s fine start somewhat tailed off as the campaign drew to a close, Silva hardly has a plethora of attacking options to choose from at Goodison Park – Lookman should be in and around the first team.

Yes, the youngster reportedly wants a ‘fresh start’ after a testing few years, but new manager Silva simply has to convince the 20-year-old to remain at Goodison Park – he’ll do that by guaranteeing him more minutes and appearances than he received last term.

Failure to do that could see the Toffees makes their biggest transfer mistake in many years.
