It’s been a fairly dreadful start to the season for the Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern, despite having watched their side splash serious cash over the course of the summer.
Indeed, the Toffees in the Tavern are already looking ahead to the January transfer window as a source of excitement, believing their team desperately needs far more investment when the New Year rolls around.
So, reports from the Sun have proven rather divisive. They claim the Merseyside club are keen on a move for Sporting Lisbon forward Seydou Doumbia, who reportedly has a £55m release clause in his deal.
The Ivorian marksman would go some way into providing Everton with a physical presence up front, though does have previous in the Premier League, and not one to get excited about.
He spent time on loan with Newcastle United prior to their relegation and barely got a sniff, even in a side that struggled to score goals before dropping into the Championship.
The jury is out on Doumbia. Though he’s largely scored goals wherever he has been – including in the Champions League – his time in the Premier League barely suggested he could fill the massive Lukaku-shaped void in Everton’s side.
