Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern are glad the season has finally come to an end as under a new manager they can start to rebuild, so our punters are hopeful they’ll return to Europe.
After spending £140m in the summer window, our punters were optimistic that the Blues could challenge for a place in the top four. However, their early season form was dreadful and led to Ronald Koeman’s dismissal. Despite steering them away from relegation, Sam Allardyce was also sacked due to his style of play at Goodison Park.
One of the main reasons the Toffees struggled was due to their failure to replace Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian left for Manchester United with Wayne Rooney returning to Everton as his replacement but the ex-England international has failed to impress and could be set to move to the MLS.
Instead of looking to replace Rooney, Everton should seek to develop youngster Kieran Dowell who spent last year on loan at Nottingham Forest. Valued at £2.7m by Transfermarkt, the 20-year-old hit the ground running with the Reds, scoring goals for fun, creating chances for his team-mates; flourishing in the number 10 role.
His form towards the end of the season declined considerably, coinciding with Forest’s dismal displays which led to the dismissal of Mark Warburton. He ended the season with nine goals, a respectable tally given Forest’s final league position. Is he ready for Premier League football? We will only know if he’s given a chance.
Under Allardyce, it’s unlikely Dowell would have suited the system and became a success. Under (potentially) Marco Silva, it could be a different story.
