Everton supporters have been pretty quiet in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side largely fail to inspire in their 1-1 draw with Premier League strugglers Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their clash with the Swans off the back of drawing 0-0 with Merseyside rivals Liverpool last week, and indeed having won their last away game 2-1 at Stoke City a few weeks earlier. And the Toffees looked on course for a second successive triumph on the road when a Kyle Naughton own goal gave them the lead, only for Jordan Ayew to net 19 minutes from time to preserve a point for Carlos Carvalhal’s side, thus leaving Everton in ninth place in the Premier League table.
Thus, there have been many downbeat Evertonians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can get back to winning ways when they face in-form Newcastle United at Goodison Park next Monday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Toffees supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Manchester United with a summer move for Leicester City’s Harry Maguire.
Ultimately, the Red Devils’ interest in Maguire would suggest that manager Jose Mourinho isn’t overly thrilled with his centre-back options at Old Trafford, with Smalling and Phil Jones two men in particular who haven’t enjoyed the best of times in recent weeks and months.
In fact, reports last month suggested that England international Smalling was one of nine players set to leave Old Trafford this summer as United seek to close the gap on champions Manchester City, and alongside reported interest in Maguire, Everton should be ready to pounce.
Yes, the 28-year-old hasn’t necessarily enjoyed the greatest of times recently, but there’s little doubting that he is a hugely adept defender at Premier League level having turned out 283 times for United since his move there from Fulham back in 2010.
Ultimately, one doesn’t play that many times for the Red Devils if one is not a fine player – significantly though, it appears that he is exactly the sort of addition Everton are crying out for in their backline this summer.
The Toffees have conceded 54 goals in 34 Premier League games this term which is the most of any team in the top ten, and with Phil Jagielka to turn 36 in August, and Leighton Baines and Ashley Williams 33, it’s clear that reinforcements are needed to strengthen their ageing backline.
And with the aforementioned trio all out of contract in the summer of 2019 (as per Transfermarkt), that process of planning for life after the experienced stars must begin in the coming months – Smalling should be, and seemingly is, on the radar of the Everton hierarchy.
And alongside recent reports depicting United’s interest in Maguire, the Merseysiders should be prompted to firm up their interest in Smalling by making a summer move for the 27-year-old.
