Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been rejoicing this week at the news that manager Sam Allardyce has left the club, despite leading the Toffees to an eighth place finish in the Premier League.
The former England boss replaced the sacked Ronald Koeman back in November with the Merseysiders languishing in and around the relegation zone, only for the Englishman to lead the club away from trouble and to a top-half finish. However, he did so in a way not well received by Everton fans up and down the country, with many voicing their displeasure at their team’s style in various matches both home and away as the season drew to a close.
Yet several of our resident Evertonians got their wish earlier this week with news that Allardyce will not take charge of the club next season, thus prompting many to speculate upon who the new man could be.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for those Toffees fans at the bar to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Arsenal could sell Aaron Ramsey this summer, reports which should trigger Everton into making an ambitious move for the £36 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the Wales international has proven to be one of the Gunners’ most consistent performers in the last few seasons, not least this campaign in which he scored 11 goals and laid on 12 assists for Arsene Wenger’s side in their run to sixth place in the Premier League, and indeed the semi-finals of the Europa League.
As such, the midfielder recorded his third ten-plus goal return in his last five seasons at the Emirates Stadium to further underline his consistency in the final third, and again throws into question why Arsenal, having done the same with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil 12 months ago, have let his contract move to within a year of expiry.
Nonetheless, Everton must seek to take advantage, and with reports suggesting that the Gunners could cash in on Ramsey this summer, the Toffees simply have to act.
The Merseysiders endured a pretty disappointing season following the optimism generated over the summer, with goals in particular a problem throughout the campaign, most notably pre-Christmas.
And with their midfield options, be it Morgan Schneiderlin struggling in a more defensive-minded role to Gylfi Sigurdsson taking time to adapt to a new club slightly further forward, also not overly convincing during the season, it’s clear that reinforcements are needed to take the Toffees on another level next term – Ramsey’s arrival would do just that.
The financial power appears to be there, based on last summer’s spending, to lure players of his calibre and magnitude to Goodison Park, and if they are serious about sustaining a challenge to the top six in the coming years, these are the sort of deals they must strive to complete.
And with the door left open by Arsenal based on recent reports, Everton must seize the initiative and bring the Welshman to the North West this summer.
