Everton supporters have been pretty subdued in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team produce a flat performance to only draw 1-1 with Premier League strugglers Swansea City on Saturday.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their encounter with the relegation-threatened Swans off the back of drawing 0-0 with Merseyside rivals Liverpool in their previous league clash, yet having won their last away game at Stoke City. And the Toffees looked set for back-to-back successes on the road for the first time since January 2017 when a Kyle Naughton own goal gave them the lead at the Liberty Stadium, only for a Jordan Ayew strike 19 minutes from time to clinch a point for Carlos Carvalhal’s side.
Thus, there have been many disappointed and frustrated Toffees fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can get back to winning ways when they host Newcastle United on Monday.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Evertonians to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that Tottenham are willing to meet the £52 million asking price for Benfica winger Andrija Zivkovic.
And these recent reports should prompt the Merseyside outfit to make a summer move for Spurs’ £22.5 million-rated star Erik Lamela (as per Transfermarkt), as the Argentine could struggle for regular minutes were Zivkovic to arrive during the close season.
Ultimately, the 26-year-old is being eased back into the first team picture by manager Mauricio Pochettino after spending a year out with a hip injury, yet he has still only mustered five Premier League starts for the club since his return in November.
And with the likes of Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min continuing to play well, and January signing Lucas Moura looking sharp whenever he takes to the field, Lamela is already struggling for regular football even now, let alone if they land 21-year-old Zivkovic this summer.
As such, the former Roma star could be on the lookout for a move away during the close season, and Everton must be ready to pounce.
Yes, Lamela missed the best part of a year due to a hip problem, but prior to that the 26-year-old was embarking on his best form since arriving at Tottenham back in 2013, having scored five goals and laid on nine assists in the 2015/16 season to help Pochettino’s men to third place in the Premier League.
And with Theo Walcott and Yannick Bolasie not quite firing in recent times, Allardyce could well be looking to bolster his attacking ranks over the summer, and there’s little doubt that Lamela would provide stiff competition to the aforementioned duo, and even get ahead of them were he to re-discover his 2015/16 form.
The 26-year-old would certainly bring extra pace, dynamism, and trickery to an Everton front line which, for the most part this season, hasn’t quite delivered the goods, and will certainly be expected to perform better next season if they are to challenge the top six.
And with reports suggesting that Pochettino is after another young winger, Everton must seek to make a move for the 26-year-old, as he could be a surplus to requirements at the North London club were Zivkovic to sign during the close season.
