Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are hugely anticipating the new era at their football club following the appointment of Marco Silva as the club’s new manager at the rear end of last week.
The Portuguese had been out of work since losing his job at Watford back in January, but returns to the Premier League after stints at Vicarage Road and indeed Hull City, with both eventually ending in his sacking. However, the Merseysiders have now got their man and the man owner Farhad Moshiri has wanted all along, with the 40-year-old to take over as the Toffees boss following the departure of Sam Allardyce last month, this all despite leading the club to eighth place this time round.
Nonetheless, there are many optimistic and expectant Evertonians in the Tavern at present, although they are unlikely to be overly thrilled by recent reports linking goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with German giants Bayern Munich.
And after the fine season the £27 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) had this time round, retaining the 24-year-old is the single most important job Silva has to do during the close season.
Ultimately, the England international enjoyed a mightily impressive debut season at Goodison Park following his move from Sunderland last summer, with the 24-year-old keeping ten clean sheets and shipping 58 goals in his 38 Premier League appearances.
And while those numbers are hardly ground-breaking, Everton’s difficulties over the course of the campaign would without doubt have been tougher were it not for Pickford’s efforts, who made several important saves to help bail out a Toffees backline that were far from their best over the course of the season.
In fact, Pickford has performed so impressively at times this term that he looks set to be Gareth Southgate’s England number one for this summer’s World Cup in Russia, a remarkable rise for someone who just two years ago made his Premier League debut.
And such have been his efforts this season, it’s clear that new Everton boss Silva has to retain the young shot-stopper this summer.
While there have been huge question marks surrounding the ability of Michael Keane and many of the Everton defenders, no such concerns are had with Pickford, so to take him out of the side would only serve to significantly weaken an already vulnerable Toffees defence.
And given that the unconvincing duo of Maarten Stekelenburg and Joel Robles are the back-up goalkeepers, it’s imperative that the Toffees retain one of the most prized assets, as the aforementioned pair simply aren’t good enough to be relied upon over the course of a season.
Thus, while several additions are clearly needed at Goodison Park this summer, retaining their best players is also hugely important, which is why keeping hold of Pickford amid interest from Bayern is the single most important job Silva has this summer.
