According to a recent report from The Liverpool Echo, Everton’s James McCarthy is closing in on a return to first team action. The 27-year-old has been restricted to the sidelines ever since he broke his leg against West Brom back in January of this year, which came just a handful of games after he returned to the Toffees side following a hamstring problem.
Yet reports suggest that the Republic of Ireland international is set to return to first team training very soon, which could prove to be absolutely massive for manager Marco Silva as he seeks to continue stamping his authority on things at Goodison Park.
Ultimately, the Portuguese took over at the Merseyside outfit during the summer amid much excitement and anticipation, with several Evertonians hoping that the former Hull City and Watford chief could bring the good times back to the Toffees.
And while there have been plenty of encouraging signs in their first four games of the campaign, it’s pretty clear that further improvement is needed if his team are to turn those draws, of which they have had three, into victories on a regular basis.
And further guile and strength in the middle of the park could be exactly what Silva is looking for, and £7.2 million-rated McCarthy (as per Transfermarkt) would no doubt give him that.
The 27-year-old made the move to Goodison Park back in 2013 to reunite with manager Roberto Martinez, who he worked with at Wigan Athletic, and has managed 132 appearances for the Toffees in that time, netting six goals and laying on ten assists along the way.
Injuries have no doubt hampered his progress during his time on Merseyside though, but such is the type of midfielder McCarthy is, strong and tenacious off the ball but with genuine quality on it, he appears to be exactly what Silva wants from a central midfielder.
In fact, his return from injury will surely feel like a new signing to Silva and his team, and as such will be massive for the Portuguese chief as he seeks to take Everton to the next level.
