Reviving transfer interest this summer will cost Chelsea extra £30m

Chelsea punters in the Transfer Tavern have been left speechless by news that Everton have slapped star striker Romelu Lukaku with a world-record price-tag.

The Belgium international is the Premier League’s top scorer this season with 24 goals in 32 appearances – including a goal in the 3-1 win over Burnley on Saturday – and has made himself even more desirable to potential suitors by refusing to sign a new contract at Goodison Park.

Chelsea were keen on re-signing the 23-year-old last summer, having allowed him to leave for Merseyside (initially on loan) in 2013, and recent reports from The Telegraph have suggested they could move for him again in the coming window – something Blues fans in the Tavern are hoping will be the case amid Diego Costa’s worrying run of form.

According to The Liverpool Echo, however, Everton are hoping a new £100million price-tag will fend off potential interest in their talismanic goalscorer, increasing their valuation from last summer by a staggering £30million.

That would not only constitute a new record fee for Chelsea but also a new world-record transfer fee, gazumping the sum Premier League rivals Manchester United paid for former Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba last summer.

The Tavern’s Chelsea drinkers have been mightily impressed by Lukaku this year, but they’re not convinced he’s worth such an outlandish sum.
