Silva needs to ensure he raids rivals for £13.5m-rated lynchpin and finally oust Jagielka

Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern can finally crack a smile as Sam Allardyce’s replacement was officially announced recently.

Long-term target Marco Silva was officially appointed the new Everton manager following Allardyce’s dismissal at the end of the season. Silva was initially targeted following the sacking of Ronald Koeman, but the Toffees were unable to lure him from Watford. Allardyce steadied the ship; however, his style of play left the Goodison faithful disillusioned.

The Portuguese will look to introduce his attacking style of play on Merseyside but must seek to improve his defence to do so. Ashley Williams is not good enough, and Michael Keane has failed to impress since his big-money move from Burnley. With Phil Jagielka approaching retirement, he needs a new centre-back.

Newcastle defender, Jamaal Lascelles, would solve all of his problems. Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, the 24-year-old enjoyed a fantastic season as the Magpies finished tenth in the Premier League. The Englishman can count himself unlucky to have not earnt a place in England’s World Cup squad.

The ex-Nottingham Forest defender is constantly improving and would be a massive upgrade to the Everton defence. Strong in a tackle and great in the air, Lascelles would install some much-needed solidarity into the Everton back line and allow Silva to implement his attacking philosophy.
