The long time touted transfer of Jack Rodwell from Everton to Manchester United was apparently on the cards but the £15m fee quoted was too rich for the Scot.
It was heavily speculated throughout the summer that Manchester United would make a midfield addition in the form of Wesley Sneijder but when that failed to come to the fore, Ferguson turned his attention to a player he has long admired.
Looking at the prospective deal objectively, £15m for Jack Rodwell seems cheap. An article I wrote here outlines how I feel about Jack Rodwell and his future in the game and the national set up. He is already an accomplished Premier League player with versatility to match.
If this deal was on the cards, perhaps Everton’s last minute sale of Mikel Arteta to Arsenal halted this deal, as surely selling both would have caused a mountain of problems for Bill Kenwright. Everton’s midfield would possess significantly less bite should they have sold both players, and perhaps Rodwell will come under increased pressure now the Spanish wizard has departed.
With Rodwell at Utd, Fergie would have had one hell of a selection choice. Tom Cleverly has started well but needs to prove consistency. Darren Fletcher is on the verge of re-entering the side so competition would be tough. Rodwell would offer something different however, as his explosive box-to-box style play is something Manchester United perhaps lack – atleast to the calibre Rodwell provides.
On the contrary, Everton’s midfield would look slightly barren. It is fantastic news for Evertonians that they retained the young English star this summer.
What is your opinion on Jack Rodwell? Is he good enough for Manchester United and whats he worth? Furthermore, do you believe TuttermercatoWeb that a deal was on the cards?
