Everton fans were merry in the Transfer Tavern on the weekend as their Toffees side beat Sunderland to move to within four points of Manchester United in sixth place in the Premier League.
Once again Romelu Lukaku was on the scoresheet, with the burly Belgian moving level with Alexis Sanchez and Harry Kane at the top of the division’s scoring chart, illustrating just how important he has been to the team’s cause this term.
Despite being a talismanic figure at Goodson Park, Lukaku’s own future has been the subject of doubt for some time, with reports from the Mirror over the summer suggesting that the striker believed he had ‘unfinished business’ at Chelsea, who are, according to Yahoo Sport, very much interested in the man they sold to Everton ahead of the summer.
But we’re expecting a few lunchtime punters representing the blue half of Merseyside to be in fine mood today, with the player’s agent, Mino Raiola, having revealed that his client is almost certain to sign a new contract with the club.
Speaking to talkSPORT, when asked if Lukaku will renew his contract, he said:
He was then pressed on whether the deal is done, to which he replied: “99.99999999%!
“We are signing a longer contract, so that is for sure the intention [to stay].
“In football, contracts are not there to be going until the end sometimes, but there is always two parties in the deal.
“If everybody thinks it is better to move on, then that will be done at that moment. But for this moment, he is signing a contract with Everton.”
Whether or not this is a move to ensure Everton get a big fee from any potential suitors this simmer remains to be seen, but Toffees fans can rest easy knowing their club are working hard to keep their best players.
