Henry’s loan spell at Arsenal has drawn a lot of attention over the past few months. Sure it was brief but it gave Arsenal fans a reminder of glory days, and Thierry chipped in with some decent performances on the pitch. A solid, albeit brief loan spell.
However another MLS loanee has been quietly been playing his socks off. Landon Donovan has played in every match since his move, and his importance to the team was underlined with January’s player of the Month award. Something he also won during his previous loan spell. Which means in 4 months in the EPL he has won PotM twice.
Donovan is needed back in the States, and Saturday will be his last game with the Toffees, but hopefully not for long. Donovan told Reuters ,
“It would be hard to go to any other club now so if anything were to happen I would imagine it would be here at Everton,” Donovan told Reuters.
“My commitment is for two more years to the Galaxy and we’ll see what happens after this year but I would obviously welcome the opportunity to come back.”
Donovan has now had 2 successful loan spell with Everton, and is popular with the fans. Is it time for Everton to step up and make an offer.
Standing in their way is a likely £10 million transfer fee! MLS plays hard-ball with their stars, and have previously demanded fee’s of £7 million for Jozy Altidore, and £2 million for Freddy Adu, and Donovan means much more to the league’s revenue than either of those.
But Everton should consider paying it. After all, he is proven to fit in the system, and knows the club and the playing style. Even if the same kind of money could be used for a teenage wunderkid there would always be the element of risk. A move for Landon is the opposite of risky, something that may please the frugal owners.
Everton wants Donovan, Donovan wants Everton but with the player already 29 years old, is he worth the fee? This summer may be his last chance, and Everton fans will have to hope MLS show some flexibility.
