Everton supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team only muster a 0-0 draw with a make-shift Liverpool XI in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Saturday.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their meeting with their bitter rivals off the back of losing 3-1 at home to Manchester City in their previous league encounter, whom Saturday’s opponents then thumped 3-0 in the Champions League in midweek. And despite the numerous changes made by Reds chief Jurgen Klopp on Saturday, the Toffees weren’t able to end an eight-year wait for a win over their city neighbours in only managing a goalless draw at Goodison Park, a result which kept them ninth in the Premier League table.
Subsequently, there have been many frustrated Evertonians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom felt there was a great opportunity for their side on Saturday to finally record a win over Liverpool, what with it eight years since their last success over their bitter rivals.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Toffees fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Olympiakos aren’t willing to make Kevin Mirallas’ loan move to the club permanent during the summer.
Thus, a return to Merseyside could be in the offing for the £9 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt), yet the Toffees hierarchy simply must seek to cash in on the inconsistent winger during the close season.
Ultimately, the 30-year-old has somewhat flattered to deceive since his move to Everton back in 2012, with the Belgium international bagging 38 goals in 186 appearances for the Toffees, 17 of which coming in his first two seasons at Goodison Park.
As such, the winger hasn’t really had a big impact at the Merseyside outfit in recent times, hence he was shipped out on loan to Olympiakos back in January, and with Theo Walcott making the move from Arsenal in the same month, and Yannick Bolasie returning from injury in recent times, Mirallas simply isn’t going to command regular football at Everton.
Add in the young duo of Nikola Vlasic and Ademola Lookman, and the 30-year-old would likely return to Goodison Park very low down Allardyce’s pecking order to further suggest that he is a surplus to requirements at the club – ultimately, they haven’t missed him since he made the temporary move to Greece in January.
And while Olympiakos may not be keen on a permanent deal, Mirallas has done well in English football in the past to suggest that he could be an asset to clubs if given a fresh start, but that shouldn’t come at Everton.
As such, the Toffees must seek to cash in on the Belgian star come the summer.
